First Meeting

E-mail Print PDF
Our first meeting is set for next Monday (August 31st) 6:00PM at Shakespeares.  I'll call today and see if we can reserve the back room.  Otherwise, we'll just put some tables together.

I'm going to be posting flyers for the meeting today around campus.

Also, if any of our officers are on here, finance and admin training are scheduled for tonight and tomorrow.  5-7 and 7-9 upstairs in the new Brady.

I will be setting up our table at speaker's circle starting wednesday from 10-1(ish).  If anyone knows somewhere close to the speaker's circle that I could stash our table/easy-up/literature, please e-mail me.

I can be reached at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Another Year Begins

E-mail Print PDF

Hey Everyone,

Another school year will be starting soon, and we need to establish some goals for our organization.

I have received our new shipment of literature.  We will, of course, want to set up our outreach table.  We will also be getting a fresh print budget, and could start printing off flyers.  Those of you, like myself, that never use their full budget could donate some of that to the organization by volunteering to print off small batches of flyers and literature.

Our last year was plagued by a highly variable amount of participation.  In my opinion, the lack of definite activites and a definitive mission contributed to this.  Aside from our regular business meetings, we need ideas for other activites.  I talked to Gary Nolan at the recent Fair Tax rally, and he indicated that he would be willing to speak for us on campus.  We had also previously discussed the idea of a reading group.  In the interest of livening up the meetings, we also decided to move the meetings from the classroom to Shakespeare's.  If anyone else has any ideas for activities they would like to see us do, please don't hesitate to e-mail me ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ), and let me know.

I would like to schedule a meeting before school starts to line out next semester's goals.  For those of you still in Columbia, or arriving early, let me know when would be good for everyone to meet.

Meeting Notes 12/08/2008

E-mail Print PDF

Notes from the meeting today follow,

  • The impeachment failed 7-6, so I remain president.
  • We voted unanimously to read essays instead of books for the reading group. Please give us an idea about what essays and what day/time works for you next semester at the forums.
  • Next semester we will NOT be having general assembly meetings every week. We will have a executive board meetings every week which anyone is welcome to attend and will have monthly general assembly meetings. It is requested that you submit stuff you want on the agenda for the GA meeting a WEEK beforehand.
  • Please post up suggestions on the forums for the GA meetings dates/times for next semester. We want as many people as possible to be able to show up.
  • Jake Martin (the great), our secretary, volunteered to teach a self-defense class on campus next semester to raise funds for the organization. I will coordinate with him and let everyone know where and when.
  • Roger Webb discussed being more involved with the community @ large and also with other organizations (such as NORML). We also agreed, in principle, to start a chapter of the Young Americans for Liberty at Mizzou. Please give your ideas/thoughts on the above at the forums.
Thats pretty much it. We had a great semester, thanks everyone! Please plan to burst the organization with activity next semester, we need it!

Good luck on finals (I know I need it)!

Love,
Ismail Hameduddin

Do You Feel Like A Terrorist Today?

Missouri report on militias, terrorists draws criticism

(While I had our table set up at the Tea Party, and AP reporter presented me with this report and asked for comment.  Wow, that's all I have to say.  The story covers the rest -Roger)

From the KC Star:

http://www.kansascity.com/116/story/1086524.html

COLUMBIA, Mo. | A new document meant to help Missouri law enforcement agencies identify militia members or domestic terrorists has drawn criticism for some of the warning signs mentioned.

The Feb. 20 report called "The Modern Militia Movement" mentions such red flags as political bumper stickers for third-party candidates, such as U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, who ran for president last year; talk of conspiracy theories, such as the plan for a superhighway linking Canada to Mexico; and possession of subversive literature.

"It seems like they want to stifle political thought," said Roger Webb, president of the University of Missouri campus Libertarians. "There are a lot of third parties out there, and none of them express any violence. In fact, if you join the Libertarian Party, one of the things you sign in your membership application is that you don't support violence as a means to any ends."

But state law enforcement officials said the report is being misinterpreted.

Lt. John Hotz of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said the report comes from publicly available, trend data on militias. It was compiled by the Missouri Information Analysis Center, a "fusion center" in Jefferson City that combines resources from the federal Department of Homeland Security and other agencies. The center, which opened in 2005, was set up to collect local intelligence to better combat terrorism and other criminal activity, he said.

"All this is an educational thing," Hotz said of the report. "Troopers have been shot by members of groups, so it's our job to let law enforcement officers know what the trends are in the modern militia movement."

But Tim Neal, a military veteran and delegate to last year's state GOP convention, was shocked by the report's contents.

"I was going down the list and thinking, 'Check, that's me,'" he said. "I'm a Ron Paul supporter, check. I talk about the North American union, check. I've got the 'America: Freedom to Fascism' video loaned out to somebody right now. So that means I'm a domestic terrorist? Because I've got a video about the Federal Reserve?"

Neal, who has a Ron Paul bumper sticker on his car, said the next time he is pulled over by a police officer, he won't know whether it's because he was speeding or because of his political views.

"If a police officer is pulling me over with my family in the car and he sees a bumper sticker on my vehicle that has been specifically identified as one that an extremist would have in their vehicle, the guy is probably going to be pretty apprehensive and not thinking in a rational manner," Neal said. "And this guy's walking up to my vehicle with a gun."

But Hotz said using factors in the report to determine whether someone could be a terrorist is not profiling. He said people who display signs or bumper stickers from third-party groups are not in danger of harassment from police.

"It's giving the makeup of militia members and their political beliefs," Hotz said of the report. "It's not saying that everybody who supports these candidates is involved in a militia. It's not even saying that all militias are bad."

The Campus Libertarians are growing and changing at a rapid rate this semester.

As of our December 1st meeting, we are now "The College Libertarians of Missouri: University of Missouri - Columbia Chapter".

We are in the process of forming a state-wide College Libertarians of Missouri.   This organization will be a non-profit and will be affiliated with the state Libertarian Party.

We recently held a forum on campus with Gary Nolan, and will be starting a regular reading and discussion group beginning next semester.

We have established guidelines for membership in the organization.  Dues are $15, with $10 going to the MU organization and $5 going to the state organization.  If you have not already done so, please submit your dues to the treasurer.

We will be meeting again on Monday, December 8th at 5:30pm in 208 Strickland.
